Regular Season Game 18 – Washington Wizards vs Orlando Magic

  • Venue – The Amway Center, Orlando, Florida
  • U.K. tip time is midnight, which is 7pm for our friends in Orlando.
  • To watch here in the U.K. you will again need an active NBA League Pass subscription.

Orlando Magic

  • Regular Season Record: 12-5 Run: won 7
  • Home Record 7-2 Road Record 5-3
  • Standing: tied 3rd in the East (record is tied for 3rd and 4th with Philadelphia)
  • Points Per GameFor 112.6 (18th) Against 107.4 (5th)
  • RatingOffensive 19th Defensive 2nd
  • This winning streak is the team’s longest since December 23rd 2010 through January 8th 2011, which was a team-record-tying 9 games.
  • During the winning streak the Magic have found rhythm and it has seen improved statistics on offensive play for both the team and individual. They have shot 50%-or-better in 4 games straight. That is a first since March/April 2016.
  • In this 7 game run of wins there have been three occasions where we have conceded 116 points or more. Despite that seeing our points conceded take a hit the defence by Orlando over all remains excellent. Jalen Suggs now has the 4th best defensive rating in the NBA, Paolo and Joe Ingles are also just inside the top 20. The team stats are still impressive with the Magic second for steals made per game, most opponent ball turn over, the fewest total field goal attempts, fourth fewest baskets conceded, the fewest opponent total and offensive rebounds, third fewest opponent defensive rebounds; and finally the least opposition assists. They are 2nd for the fewest opponent second chance points and are only conceding 46.8 points in the paint (10th fewest)
  • Scoring is being led by the current Eastern Conference Player of the Week; Paolo Banchero with 19.8 ppg. Franz Wagner is second with 19.5. Third on the team and leading the bench is Cole Anthony with 15 points per game.
  • Paolo Banchero is also the team leader for assists (4.6) per game. Jalen Suggs is the leader for steals per game at 1.9 (that figure is the 3rd best in the league). Goga Bitadze leads in blocks with 1.6 per game (14th in the NBA).

In-Season Tournament

  • For Orlando the In-Season Tournament is over. The Magic had a record of 3-1, with a points differential of plus 22. Unfortunately that was not enough to see the Magic progress, being eliminated by Boston from Group C. A 97-124 win for the Celtics over Chicago saw them secure a 3-1 record also, but were 5 points better off than Orlando. Neither did Orlando secure the Eastern Conference “wild card” spot, finishing third in that category. Here the New York Knicks advance with a huge points difference of plus 42.

Last Game – Vs Charlotte Hornets

  • In what could easily have been a reversal for the Magic; Orlando settled themselves to beat the Charlotte Hornets by 117-130.
  • The Magic did give a huge effort throughout.
  • Truth be told the Hornets were unfortunate to see LaMelo Ball withdraw with what looked a painful right ankle sprain.
  • The Magic had 6 players with 10-points-plus. This was a 17th game straight the team had 5-players-plus score in double figures. The last time this happened was January/February 2018.
  • Team scoring was led by Franz Wagner and Cole Anthony, who each fired in 30 points. Wagner made his first nine attempts and finished 11-of-15. Anthony, hit 9-of-16 field goal attempts, made all but one of his 12 free throws, also adding 7 rebounds and 7 assists.
  • Paolo Banchero further filled the stat sheet with 23 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists.
  • The Magic dished out a season-best 33 assists.
  • The starting unit was again Anthony Black, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero and Goga Bitadze.
  • From the bench came Cole Anthony, Gary Harris, Moe Wagner, Joe Ingles and Caleb Houstan.

Tonight

  • The Magic injury report has Jonathan Isaac (left ankle; sore) listed as questionable. Wendell Carter Jr. (left hand; fractured third metacarpal), Markelle Fultz (left knee tendinitis), Kevon Harris (coach’s decision), Jett Howard (G League – On Assignment) and Trevelin Queen (G League – Two-Way) are out for Orlando.
  • Wendell Carter Jr has made progress and now has the cast removed. He is back practicing.
  • It is hard to see there being any huge rotation changes for this match again.

The Washington Wizards

A Quick Look Back

  • Last season was another of disappointment and no progress. It saw a 35-47 record and an underwhelming finish of 12th in the East.
  • Key additions came in a fresh start for Jordan Poole and Tyus Jones in trades. They also drafted Bilal Coulibaly, a great two-way prospect who is featuring heavily in the team rotation. Further they picked up Danilo Gallinari, Mike Muscala and Landry Shamet.

Season Stats

  • Regular Season Record: 3-14 Run: won 1 in their last 10 played
  • Standing: 14th in the East
  • Points Per GameFor 116.1 (9th) Against 124 (29th)
  • RatingOffensive 22nd Defensive 27th
  • This offence is based on attacking inside the arc and moving the ball. They shoot the fourth most in the league, making the second most (32.5 makes from 60.6 attempts per game). I’ll talk more about this later.
  • However the defence is pretty much bottom half of the league in every category.
  • Kyle Kuzma is the team leader in scoring with 23.4 points per game. He is also providing 4.8 assists and 6.2 rebounds
  • Jordan Poole is following up with 17.3 points per game as he adjusts to playing for the Wizards.
  • Assists are being led by Tyus Jones with 4.9 per game, whilst Daniel Gafford leads the team per game on rebounds (7.7) and blocks (2). Gafford has the 9th best offensive rating in the NBA.

Last Time Out For The Wizards

  • On Monday the Wizards took a road win by 126-107 over the Detroit Pistons.
  • The Wizards held the lead at the close of the first quarter. They sealed the victory with a dominant second half, outscoring Detroit by 16 in the half.
  • Kyle Kuzma hit a 32 point, 12 assist double-double, with 8 assists.
  • Six other Washington players scored 10-points-or-more, a team scoring effort on the back of 29 assists.
  • Starting 5 – Tyus Jones, Jordan Poole, Deni Avdija, Kyle Kuzma, Daniel Gafford
  • Danilo Gallinari, Corey Kispert, Landry Shamet and Bilal Coulibaly came from the bench for the major second unit minutes.

Tonight

  • The Wizards have Delon Wright and Ryan Rollins both out for the game.
  • When fit all five who started their game In Detroit have been the go to unit.

Head-To-Head With The Washington Wizards

  • In 135 regular season games played Orlando lead by 75-60.
  • The Magic are on a 2 game streak over Washington. Last season was a series tie, with both teams winning a road and a home game.
  • The previous season had been a 0-4 sweep for Washington, part of a 7 game winning streak they had over Orlando.
  • Prior to that streak for the Wizards the Magic had won 6 straight.

The Washington Wizards Are In Orlando And Here’s A Final Thought

  • The Washington Wizards are in Orlando and it will be a battle of two teams who attack the paint and force their opponents into turnovers. Both Washington and Orlando are best attacking from inside the arc. The Magic are making 53.9% of our two-point-field-goal attempts, the Wizards 56.4%. Orlando are 6th in scoring points in the paint (54.8 per game), Washington second (with 57.5 per game). Washington take 19.1 points per game off of turnovers (5th rated), where Orlando lead the league in this category with 21.1 per game. Orlando are 2nd in the NBA for steals per game, with  9.5, but Washington are strong here also with 7.8 made each game.
  • An advantage the Magic hold is in the hustle “bell-ringing” plays. The Magic rank strongly in charges taken, deflections, loose balls recovered and box outs. Jalen Suggs (loose ball and deflections), Moe Wagner (charges drawn) and Paolo Banchero (contesting three point shots) appear in the lists for hustle play by individuals.
