Last Time Out For Orlando: vs The Dallas Mavericks

  • A heartbreaking loss on the road in Dallas by 129-131, that saw the Magic play a disastrous 3rd quarter and be on the wrong end of some very dubious officiating.
  • It looked like the Mavs had the game won with Doncic living at the line late to put them three points ahead. Dallas were intentionally fouling to prevent the Magic from getting a 3-point shot off. However the Magic engineered a chance to win at the buzzer, thanks to a an on-purpose missed free throw by Paolo Banchero with 3.1 seconds remaining. The ball landed with Franz Wagner, who got up a potential game-winning 3-pointer from about 30 feet that unfortunately rimmed out.
  • Orlando held a 16 point lead at the half after scoring 77 points, which tied the high Dallas have conceded in the first half this season.
  • What ensued was a disastrous third quarter performance, Dallas outscoring Orlando by 35-12.
  • The final period was about as exciting as basketball can get with multiple ties and lead changes.
  • Paolo Banchero had a sensational outing, racking up 36 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists.
  • Franz Wagner finished with 21 points.
  • Rookie Anthony Black had one of his most impressive performances of the season in front of his home crowd, recording 20 points on 7-of-9 overall shooting and hitting 4-of-4 on three-point shooting.
  • The starting unit was BIG! Making his first start since January 1st 2020 Jonathan Isaac joined Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr.
  • From the bench came Anthony Black, Cole Anthony, Moritz Wagner and Joe Ingles were the core. Chuma Okeke saw 10 minutes of action and Goga Bitadze came in for the final 3 seconds of the game.
  • Trevelin Queen, Caleb Houstan and Admiral Schofield were available but did not play.

  • Markelle Fultz is available again tonight, as is Jonathan Isaac.
  • Gary Harris (calf) is again listed as out for the 14th consecutive game.
  • Jett Howard is unavailable on G-League assignment again.
  • Kevon Harris is listed as out, simply as being “G-League two-way”.
  • Therefore, Coach Mosley could return to his preferred starting option with Markelle Fultz. It could be interesting to see if the Coach finds a way to implement the exceptional defensive abilities of JI into the starting 5 again as a response to Wembanyama.

The San Antonio Spurs

  • At home the Spurs have a 5-18 record.
  • This team takes the third most shots per game (91.3) and moves the ball to rank third in assists.
  • Aside from blocks the Spurs defensive stats are virtually all in the bottom third of the league.
  • Clearly, it is all eyes on this season’s number 1 pick, Victor Wembanyama. He is without doubt a generational talent, averaging a double-double in his rookie year of 20.6 points and 10.1 rebounds. Throw in 3.1 blocks and you can understand how he is their lead threat.
  • However you can not ignore the scoring contributions of Devin Vassell (18.2 ppg) and Keldon Johnson (16.7 ppg).

  • Starting 5 – Devin Vassell, Tre Jones, Jeremy Sochan, Julian Champagnie, Victor Wembanyama
  • Keldon Johnson, Cedi Osman Dominick Barlow, Blake Wesley and Doug McDermott came from the bench.
  • Malaki Branham, Devonte Graham and Sandro Mamukelashvlii were available but did not play.

  • Zach Collins and Keldon Johnson are both day-to-day and questionable for the game.
  • Legendary NBA coach Gregg Popovich will be coaching his team hard for a win and he has a lot of potential available to use to that ends.

The Orlando Magic Are In San Antonio: A Final Thought

  • Do not underestimate the Spurs, despite their record.
  • However, all eyes will be on the last two seasons No.1 picks, both generational, star talents. In January Banchero has put up 25.8 points, 6.9 re rebounds and 5.6 assists. Wemby has 24.8, 9.8 and 3.3 in those same categories. This is a matchup you can not want to miss.
  • The Magic have played 25 games on the road this season and 13 have been decided by five points or less. An incredible 9 games have been by three points or less. No team this season has had more road nailbiters than the Magic.
