Last Time Out For Orlando: vs Oklahoma City Thunder

  • The Magic took a home court loss against the Thunder last night by 127- 113
  • Orlando were simply beaten by a team that is further along the road of development. It may only be one game but OKC showed up some our current shortcomings.
  • Magic led by 11 early before the Thunder seized control. Once they did honestly the result lol and felt inevitable.
  • Paolo Banchero again showed his value to the team with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists.
  • Franz Wagner had 15 points, a game where he struggled in periods.
  • Wendell Carter Jr scored 22 points but at times he seemed ineffective against the Oklahoma physicality on both ends.
  • Jalen Suggs had 17 points, being unstoppable from range early.
  • The starting lineup was Markelle Fultz, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr.
  • From the bench Jonathan Isaac, Gary Harris, Cole Anthony, Moritz Wagner and Joe Ingles were the core used.
  • With 2:23 remaining Orlando waved the white flag. Goga Bitadze, Anthony Black, Chuma Okeke, Caleb Houstan and Jett Howard came in to close from the bench.
  • All three two-way players, being Kevon Harris, Trevelin Queen and Admiral Schofield were available but did not dress.

Tonight

  • As the Magic host the Knicks Markelle Fultz and Gary Harris are both out. Neither is playing on the second night of a back-to-back at this point as part of their injury management plan.
  • Coach Mosley is likely to bring in Anthony Black at the guard position as his enforced starting option.

The New York Knicks

Season Stats

  • Regular Season Record: 33-21 Run: Lost 3 and are at 6-4 in the last 10 played.
  • Standing: 4th in the East
  • Points Per GameFor 114.8 Against 109.8
  • RatingOffensive 8th Defensive 8th
  • On the road the Knicks have been relatively strong, holding an 14-13 record.
  • The Knicks are among the league leaders in offensive rebounds (3rd), which sees them second in scoring second chance points. Though not excelling in most offensive categories the Knicks are effective at turning the opportunities they have into points.
  • Defensively, the Knicks keep fouls low and so restrict free throw opportunities. They are very effective at defence of the paint. Opponent second chance points are also second fewest in the NBA through the Knicks outstanding rebounding ability.
  • The team are led by two All-Stars in Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle. Unfortunately for them only one is available. Brunson is averaging 27.5 points per game, shooting over 48% and making 6.5 assists.
  • Again, since the Magic last encountered the Knicks their team has changed. The Knicks were active at the trade deadline picking up Alec Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic. They had already acquired OG Anunoby from Toronto on December 30th.

Last Time Out For The New York Knicks

  • The Knicks took a road loss to the Houston Rockets by 103-105 on February 12th.
  • Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with a performance of 27 points and 7 assists.
  • Donte DiVincenzo followed up with 23 points and 4 assists.
  • Josh Hart had a 17 point and 11 rebound double-double.
  • Precious Achiuwa pulled down 17 rebounds, whilst also recording 8 points and 3 blocks.
  • Bojan Bogdanovic led the bench with 15 points.
  • Starting 5 – Donte DiVincenzo, Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Jericho Sims, Precious Achiuwa
  • From the bench came Bojan Bogdanovic, Alec Burks, Taj Gibson and Miles McBride.
  • Charlie Brown Jr and Jacob Toppin were available but did not play. Isaiah Hartenstein was a scratch and did not dress.
  • OG Anunoby, Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson and Duane Washington Jr were unavailable.

Tonight

  • The Knicks have three significant injury absences and two concerns.
  • The biggest loss is that of Julius Randle, out having dislocated a shoulder. The All-Star had been putting up 24 points on 47% shooting, with 5 assists and 9.2 rebounds.
  • OG Anunoby in 14 games with the Knicks had been averaging 15.6 points, 1.5 assists, 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.
  • Mitchell Robinson is out for the season. However, the NBA have denied the Knicks a disabled player exception as there is some belief he could return late in the season.
  • Isaiah Hartenstein is day-to-day and questionable with an achilles injury.
  • Donte DiVincenzo is day-to-day and questionable with a hamstring issue.
  • Expect that Coach Thibodeau will again go with the same starting five if DiVincenzo is passed fit. Alec Burks is the obvious replacement to move into the starting 5 if change is required.

Head-To-Head With The New York Knicks

  • In 128 regular season games played the score stands at 126-122 to Orlando.
  • So far this season there have been two meetings. On game day 31 Orlando showed a gritty attitude to take a home win by 108-117. Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero both had big performances, whilst Jalen Suggs was at his very best on both ends of the floor. Julius Randle was the Knicks leader with 38 points. On game day 40 a 98-94 road win for Orlando was again built on a total team performance of grit and determination. The Magic defence was immaculate for long stretches, allowing Orlando to hang around on difficult shooting night (39.8%). The Knicks came up empty on 10 of their last 12 shots from open play, also failing to make 3 key free throws late.
  • Orlando now have a three game win streak over the Knicks.
  • Last season the Knicks won the series 1-2.
  • Each regularly take wins against the other, both at home and on the road. In the last 10 games played each has 5 wins. Across the past 4 seasons there have been 8 games in Orlando, each team has 4 wins.

A Final Thought As The Magic Host The Knicks

  • It will be physical, it won’t be pretty and both teams will fight hard.
  • For Orlando a win tonight would be a huge boost going into All-Star and a great way to bounce back after the disappointing loss to the Thunder.
  • To take a win tonight the young Magic squad will have to find a way to meet the mental challenge of winning on a back-to-back. They can not allow themselves to feel sorry for themselves and embrace that they are learning how to win and be successful. Our season record so far is showing that is happening.
