The Magic Face The New York Knicks

  • Tonight on home court the Magic face the New York Knicks. For Orlando it is again a key game with both seeking success in the East. This is the Magic’s final home fixture of 2023. Next up is a four game road trip out West.

Regular Season Game 31 – New York Knicks vs Orlando Magic

  • Venue – Kia Center, Orlando, Florida
  • U.K. tip time is midnight, which is 7pm local for our friends in Orlando.
  • To watch here in the U.K. you will again need an active NBA League Pass subscription.

Orlando Magic

  • Regular Season Record: 18-12
  • Run: lost 1 and are 4-6 in the last 10 played.
  • Home Record 11-4 (11-3 in the Kia Center; the Atlanta “home court” loss was in Mexico City)
  • Road Record 7-8
  • Standing: 5th in the East
  • Points Per GameFor 112.9 (22nd) Against 110.7 (6th)
  • RatingOffensive 24th Defensive 4th
  • This is as expected, proving to be a difficult time in the schedule. Results are mixed and some of the performances have been less than any fan would want to see. The three point shooting is consistently poor and against competent defensive teams we are at times almost being dared to shoot as they set up to defend inside the arc.
  • That being said injury is hitting this team hard in what is our hardest stretch of the schedule. In no way should the absence of Joe Ingles and Jonathan Isaac be underestimated as to the impact of the bench.

Last Time Out – vs Philadelphia 76ers

  • The Sixers came into the Kia Center, Orlando and left with a strong win by 112-92 over the Magic. The game was closer for most of the way than the score suggests.
  • The negative stuff is telling though. Orlando’s 92 points is a season low. It was the third worst field goal percentage of the season. The Magic gave up 16 turnovers.
  • Philly found their rhythm early and without Joel Embiid saw big games from Tyrese Maxey, Tobias Harris and De’Anthony Melton.
  • The Sixers clogged the paint on the defensive end. Early on Orlando were getting through to score but as fatigue showed on the second night of a back-to-back the rhythm and movement disappeared. From being just 3 down early in the final quarter the Sixers went on a 26-6 run to seal it.
  • Orlando were ineffective shooting the three all night. Indeed; it was two clear open looks that were badly missed during that Sixers 26-6 run that took the fight and belief out of the Magic team. You saw heads drop and knew the game was lost.
  • Only three Magic players scored in double digits. Franz Wagner led all scorers with a game-high 24 points. Jalen Suggs scored 20 and Paolo Banchero had 19 points.
  • The starting unit was Anthony Black, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr.
  • From the bench came Cole Anthony, Moritz Wagner, Goga Bitadze, Chuma Okeke and Caleb Houstan. For the final 1 minute 15 seconds Jett Howard, Trevelin Queen and Admiral Schofield played.

  • Gary Harris (right calf strain) and Jonathan Isaac (right hamstring soreness) are listed as questionable.
  • Markelle Fultz (left knee tendinitis) is again absent, now having missed the last 22 games.
  • Joe Ingles (left ankle sprain) is also confirmed as out.
  • Kevon Harris is listed as a coach’s decision to not play.
  • Expect Orlando to run with the same opening 5 tonight again.

  • Another strength the Knicks have is an ability to limit turnovers and personnel fouls.
  • The Knicks limit opponents scoring in the paint to the same level as Orlando do.
  • New York have an excellent offensive record, shooting well from both the three and the free throw line. From the two the Knicks shoot at a high rate but have one of the poorer make percentages in the NBA.
  • On the road the Knicks are at 9-9.
  • Both Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle are scoring for fun, recording 26 and 22.9 points per game. Together, they also combine to provide almost 11 assists per game.

  • Expect little change in the starting 5 from the Knicks.

Head-To-Head With The Knicks

  • Last season the Knicks won the series 1-2, Orlando winning the final game in March on home court.
  • Each regularly take wins against the other, both at home and on the road. In the last 6 played in Orlando each team has three wins.

A Final Thought As The Magic Face The New York Knicks

  • This is the first of 4 meetings between the two teams this season.
  • The Magic are 8-11 against teams this season that are currently at .500 or above. Against teams that are presently below that mark the record is an impressive 10-1.
  • It is likely to be a hard fought fixture, with both teams valuing scoring on the second chance and the defence of the paint.
