  • Run: won last 2 played, and are 8-2 in the last 10 games played.
  • Home Record 11-2 (10-1 in the Amway Center; the Atlanta “home court” loss was in Mexico City)
  • Road Record 5-5
  • Standing: 3rd in the East (record tied with Philadelphia 76ers for 3rd-4th)

  • RatingOffensive 18th Defensive 3rd

Last Time Out – Cleveland Cavaliers

  • A 94-104 home court victory for the Magic over the Cleveland Cavaliers came in a hard fought fixture on Monday evening.
  • This was arguably one of Orlando’s better wins of the season so far. Performances have undoubtedly been better but this result was about the team showing a mental strength in some adversity. The defence wasn’t always working, the shooting from distance was again a struggle, there were some sloppy turnovers and neither team were happy about the inconsistency of officiating.
  • After halftime however the team were cohesive in all areas. The defensive display in the second half of the third quarter was just incredible, certainly some of the best D we have played all season. The run of empty Cavs possessions through the focus and discipline of the guys on the floor was incredible to see. And our offensive play benefited as a result, getting a decent lead on the scoreboard.
  • Scoring was led by Paolo Banchero with 20 points, followed by Franz Wagner who accrued 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
  • Whilst also scoring double digits there were four Magic players who had their fingerprints all over that win, being Joe Ingles, Goga Bitadze, Jalen Suggs and Jonathan Isaac.
  • Goga Bitadze had 15 points and 7 rebounds. His physical play at the centre saw battle for additional possessions all game.
  • Jalen Suggs returning to the starting unit really showed his fight, relishing the challenge the Donovan Mitchell presents. He also posted 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
  • Also back, after missing five of the previous six games with a sore ankle was Jonathan Isaac, who in 13 minutes had seven points and four rebounds. He really showed his value to the bench on both ends of the floor.
  • Finally, Joe Ingles, who finished with 12 points was a voice of influence throughout.
  • The starting unit was Anthony Black, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero and Goga Bitadze.
  • From the bench came Cole Anthony, Gary Harris, Moe Wagner, Joe Ingles and Jonathan Isaac. Caleb Houstan, Chuma Okeke Admiral Schofield and Jett Howard were available but did not play.

  • The Magic have a further improvement on the injury report.
  • Wendell Carter Jr. (left hand; fractured third metacarpal) remains out but is practicing.
  • Markelle Fultz (left knee tendinitis) is upgraded to being questionable for the game.
  • Two-way player Trevelin Queen is again not part of the squad.
  • Kevon Harris has yet to suit up for Orlando this season and is again listed as a coach’s decision to not play.
  • It is hard to see the Magic changing anything up in respect of the rotation if Markelle Fultz does not play. If he does return it would be surprising to see him play a heavy minutes load. Anthony Black, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero and Goga Bitadze could easily be the 5 on court again at the opening tip.

The Boston Celtics

Season Stats

  • Regular Season Record: 18-5 Run: Won 3 consecutive and 7 in their last 10 played
  • Standing: 1st in the East
  • Points Per GameFor 117.3 (7th) Against 108.9 (3rd)
  • RatingOffensive 6th Defensive 4th
  • This team are elite on both ends of the floor and they will be. They don’t foul a lot, are 4th best in total rebounds and are the top defensive rebounding team. They shoot the three ball the most in the league, making the second most (almost 16 makes from 42.7 attempts per game). They do not have a main focus on attacking the rim but are lethal when they go there.
  • Jayson Tatum is putting together a brilliant season and has to be a certain starter come the All-Star game. He is scoring freely and contributes in every way.
  • Kristaps Porzingis now fit again has resumed where he left off, getting blocks and scoring at a high level.
  • Jaylen Brown has increased his scoring since we last met, moving up to 22 points per game.

Last Time Out For The Celtics

  • Last night the Celtics took a home court 107-116 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, leading almost from start to finish.
  • The Celtics did see the Cavs fight back in the third quarter but 4 points was as close as they could get.
  • All 5 starters scored in double figures. Jayson Tatum led the way with a 27 point, 11 rebounds double-double.
  • Jaylen Brown had 22 points, Porzingis 18 points, Jrue Holiday 15 points and Derrick White 14.
  • Starting 5 – Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Kristaps Porzingis
  • Al Horford, Payton Pritchard, Lamar Stevens and Sam Hauser were the only ones to come from the bench.
  • Dalano Banton, Svi Mykhailiuk, Luke Kornet and Oshae Brissett were available but did not play.

  • The Celtics several injury concerns.
  • Al Horford and Luke Kornet are out.
  • Two starters are questionable, being Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis.
  • All three of their two-way players are unavailable on G-League assignment.
  • If injury does not factor in then expect the same opening unit to play for Boston as did in their outing last night against Cleveland. They rarely vary things except when enforced through injury.

Head-To-Head With The Boston Celtics

  • In 128 regular season games played and the score stands at 55-73 to the Celtics.
  • The one game this season saw Orlando produce an outstanding performance to win by 96-113 in the Amway Center. Moritz Wagner led Orlando with an efficient 27 points, whilst Paolo Banchero posted 23 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Boston were led by Jayson Tatum with 26 points.
  • The Magic are on a 4 game streak over Boston. Last season was a series 3-1 win for Orlando, with Boston winning a hard fought and close game on opening night in Orlando.
  • That opening night win last season was the Celtics 10th straight over Orlando, having swept them the three seasons prior 0-3.
  • Orlando had won the 2018-19 season 3-0 prior to that losing streak.

A Final Thought As The Magic Face The Conference Leading Celtics

  • This Boston team are elite on both ends of the floor and they will be eager to hit back hard at an Orlando team who have won 4 straight over them. That doesn’t mean the Magic will role over meekly, expect them to throw punches back. Cole Anthony has been very open that after the former Celtic player Eddie House made his comments last season there is some extra juice in facing the C’s.
  • Boston have won all 12 games played at home this season. Orlando’s road record is sat at .500 (5-5). The TD Gardens is a hostile cauldron to go into but that appears to be a challenge this Magic squad relish.
  • Both teams have been playing superb defence all season. Tonight could be decided by the fine margins. Being the second night of a back-to-back for Boston could be a factor in Orlando’s favour.
  • There is a developing rival between these teams. The Celtics are clear favourites but don’t be overly surprised if this young Magic squad enjoy upsetting the odds again.
