Last Time Out – vs The Oklahoma City Thunder

  • Another game of the same issues. Too many injury absences, too many missed free throws, too many turnovers, foul trouble and poor shooting percentages (20% from the three).
  • On the road in Oklahoma the Magic fell to a 100-112 loss to the Thunder.
  • OKC in the first half were stifled by the Magic defence, including making only 3 of 22 attempts from 3-point range. However in the third quarter OKC got going, hitting 10 of their first 12 shots in the period, finally taking a 13 point lead into the final quarter.
  • The Magic had trailed by as many as 16. Twice runs were made and pulled within 6 points in the final quarter but that was as close as it got.
  • Paolo Banchero led the Magic as he recorded 20 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists. Unfortunately only Caleb Houstan from the starting 5 made double digit scoring, with 14 points. From the bench Cole Anthony led with 14 points, followed by Anthony Black with 13.
  • Jonathan Isaac returned, having missed the last 10 games with injury. In 15 minutes of play he put up 6 points and 5 rebounds.
  • The starting unit was again Jalen Suggs, Caleb Houstan, Chuma Okeke, Paolo Banchero and Goga Bitadze.
  • From the bench came, Cole Anthony, Anthony Black, Moritz Wagner, Jonathan Isaac and Trevelin Queen.
  • Admiral Schofield was available but did not dress.

  • Jalen Suggs, Anthony Black and Cole Anthony have all been playing through illness and injury. They have all played significant minutes for the team need.
  • Jonathan Isaac, Markelle Fultz and Joe Ingles are all be available to feature again.
  • Wendell Carter Jr (knee injury) is day-to-day and shown as questionable.
  • Franz Wagner (ankle) and Gary Harris (calf) are listed as out
  • Jett Howard remains out on a G League assignment.
  • Kevon Harris is listed as out, being a Coach’s decision.
  • Should any of the day-to-day injuries become available Coach Mosley will have a decision to make on his starting group.

The New York Knicks

Season Stats

  • Regular Season Record: 23-16 Run: Won 1 and are at 6-4 in the last 10 played.
  • Standing: 7th in the East (record tied 5th – 7th with the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers)
  • Points Per GameFor 115.6 Against 111.6
  • RatingOffensive 9th Defensive 13th
  • At home the Knicks have been strong, holding an 11-4 record.
  • The Knicks are among the league leaders in offensive rebounds, which sees them leading in second chance points. Though not a leader in steals or seeing opponent turnovers the Knicks are very effective at turning the opportunities they have into points.
  • Defensively, the Knicks keep fouls low and so restrict free throw opportunities. They are very effective at defence of the paint. Opponent second chance points are also lower by their rebounding ability.
  • The team are led by two All-Stars in Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle. Brunson is averaging 25.8 points per game, shooting 47% and making 6.4 assists. Randle is putting up 24.4 points on 47% shooting, with 4.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds.
  • Since the Magic last encountered the Knicks their starting unit has changed. The Knicks acquired OG Anunoby from Toronto. In 7 games since his arrival he has averaged 14.1 points per game, being a consistent starter.

Last Time Out For The Knicks

  • Last time out on the road New York took a win over the Memphis Grizzlies by 106-94.
  • The Knicks trailed by 4 at the half but a 30-15 third quarter saw the Knicks take hold of the game. All five starters scored in double figures. New York were led by a 24 point 11 rebound double-double performance from Julius Randle. Miles McBride hit a 19 points and OG Anunoby 18 (along with making 4 blocks).
  • Starting 5 – Donte DiVincenzo, Miles McBride, OG Anunoby, Julius Randle, Isaiah Hartenstein.
  • From the bench came Josh Hart, Quentin Grimes, Malachi Flynn and Precious Achiuwa.
  • Through either injury or a coaching decision Jalen Brunson, Mitchell Robinson, Jericho Sims, Evan Fournier, Ryan Arcidiacano, Charlie Brown Jr, Jacob Toppin and Duane Washington Jr.

  • The Knicks have two significant injury concerns.
  • Mitchell Robinson is out for the season. However, the NBA have denied the Knicks a disabled player  exception as there is some belief he could return late in the season.
  • The other is to Jalen Brunson, who is listed as day-to-day with a calf injury. He did miss the Knicks last game in Memphis.
  • Expect that Coach Thibodeau will run again with the same starting five if Brunson is not able to get. If Brunson is cleared he will be immediately back into the starting unit.

Head-To-Head With The New York Knicks

  • In 127 regular season games played the score stands at 125-122 to Orlando.
  • In a single meeting so far this season on Magic game day 31 in December Orlando took a gritty attitude to the court to take the win by 108-117. Jalen Brunson was met with constant pressure from Black and Suggs. Franz Wagner put up 32 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 4 steals. Paolo Banchero scored 29, along with taking 10 rebounds for a double-double. Paolo further had 4 assists, a block and a steal. Jalen Suggs had 21 points and 6 assists. Julius Randle scored a 38 point and 12 rebound double-double. Jalen Brunson had 8 assists and 20 points.
  • Last season the Knicks won the series 1-2. With Orlando winning the final game last season they have taken the last two 2 games.
  • Each regularly take wins against the other, both at home and on the road. In the last 7 played in Orlando has four wins.

A Final Thought As The Magic Are In The Garden To Battle The Knicks

  • This game will be a hard fought, physical battle.
  • Both teams typically play a similar style of basketball. Recently that has been a little different for Orlando, somewhat enforced through necessity with availability of personnel.
  • For Orlando a win is much needed to keep themselves in the hunt for an automatic playoff seeding. Results have seen the Magic drop 2 games back of the three teams tied for 5th-7th, of which the Knicks are one.
