Last Time Out vs Portland Trail Blazers

  • In what was probably our worst performance in a win this season the Magic closed out the 8 game home stand in victory by 103-104 over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night (1st April).
  • Orlando almost made fools of themselves by allowing a 15 point lead late in the 3rd quarter to be surrendered to a much weakened Blazers side, coming all the way back to briefly take a single point lead. The Magic responded and held a 9 point lead with 2 minutes remaining. Portland again responded and with 12 seconds remaining Portland trailing by a single point gained possession. That final possession was a heart stopper as Suggs almost grappled the ball away from a driving Scoot Henderson. Henderson found an open Deandre Ayton out on the baseline. Ayton shot, but his jumper came up short at the buzzer and Orlando escaped with the win.
  • Franz Wagner led the Magic scorers with 20 points.
  • Wendell Carter Jr recorded his 8th double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Jalen Suggs had 15 points to go along with 7 assists and 2 blocks.

  • Anthony Black, Chuma Okeke, Admiral Schofield, Goga Bitadze and Kevon Harris were available but did not play.
  • Jett Howard, Caleb Houstan and Trevelin Queen were inactive for the Magic.

Tonight

  • The Magic have a clean bill of health except for Caleb Houstan. He is day-to-day and questionable with a right ankle sprain.
  • Jett Howard is again assigned to the G-League with the Osceola Magic and has not travelled with the team.
  • Trevelin Queen and Kevon Harris are also listed as unavailable, being on two-way with Osceola.
  • Coach Mosley will likely begin to lock in on his postseason rotations very soon, if not tonight. Expect to see him locking in on those favoured units.

The New Orleans Pelicans

Season Stats

  • Regular Season Record: 45-30 Run: Lost 2 and are 6-4 in the last 10 played.
  • Standing: 6th in the West
  • Points Per GameFor 115.2 Against 110.5
  • RatingOffensive 14th Defensive 4th
  • On the season the Pels have a 21-16 home record.
  • New Orleans do not shoot at the highest rate in the league, but what they do shoot is done with accuracy. They have the 6th best percentage from the three and are 8th for over all field goal percentage. They also rank extremely well in points from turnovers, on fast breaks, in the paint and on second chance scoring.
  • Defensive statistics are strong in restricting second chances points, along with points in the paint and from turnovers. Though the Pels allow teams to shoot the three almost 39 times a game they concede on only a third of those efforts, which is the best rate in the NBA.
  • They have talent, size and are finally seeing a relatively healthy roster.
  • Zion Williamson is averaging a shade shy of 30 points per game in the last five games played, on the season he leads the Pelicans with 22.9 ppg. Brandon Ingram weighs in with 21 points per game and CJ McCollum 18.8. Trey Murphy III, Jonas Valanciunas and Herb Jones all average double digit scoring.
  • Valanciunas, Williamson, Ingram and Larry Nance Jr are all very effective rebounders

Last Time Out For The New Orleans Pelicans

  • New Orleans took a home court loss to the Phoenix Suns by 124-111 on April 1st.
  • The Suns took the lead after the first two minutes of play and never let go. The Pels trailed by 20-plus points for long periods.
  • Zion Williamson led the Pelicans in scoring with 30 points. Trey Murphy III followed up with 21 points. CJ McCollum added 16 points and dished out 9 assists.
  • Starting 5 – CJ McCollum, Herbert Jones, Trey Murphy III, Zion Williamson, Jonas Valanciunas
  • From the bench came Larry Nance Jr, Dyson Daniels, Jordan Hawkins and Naji Marshall.
  • Cody Zeller, Matt Ryan, EJ Liddell and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl were unused by the coach.

Tonight

  • Brandon Ingram is confirmed out following the knee injury that forced him out in the game at the Kia Center.

  • Orlando have not lost the series since season 2011-12.

A Final Thought On Orlando Magic vs New Orleans Pelicans

  • Orlando face a tough opponent tonight who will battle hard. To beat the Pelicans is no easy task, but defending the paint and rebounding will be a corners to success against this team. If the Magic play in the same lacklustre fashion as against Portland then the outcome could be an embarrassing bloodbath of a defeat.
  • Both teams are locked into a fight for post season seeding. For New Orleans in the West only 2 wins separates Dallas in 5th (45-30) and the Lakers in 9th (43-33). For Orlando home court remains within grasp. Orlando are two games back of Cleveland in 3rd (46-30). The New York Knicks in 5th on the basis of the Magic holding the tiebreaker (44-31). Orlando also hold the tiebreaker over the Pacers in 6th, who are on a 43-33 record. The Magic are 2 wins clear of the Miami Heat (7th at 42-33) and 3 wins of the Philadelphia 76ers (8th at 41-35).
