Orlando Close Preseason Against Flamengo

  • Tonight Orlando close preseason against Flamengo of Brazil. The famous “red and black” from Rio De Janeiro has a history dating back to 1919, when the basketball team was founded.
  • U.K. tip time is midnight, that’s 7pm for our friends in Orlando.
  • To watch here in the U.K. you will need an active NBA League Pass subscription.

Orlando Magic

The Magic Preseason So Far

  • Magic preseason stands at a winning 2-1 record.
  • Orlando opened with road wins over the New Orleans Pelicans (by 122-105) and the Cleveland Cavaliers (108-105).
  • The Magic then took to their home court in the Amway Center, again facing the Pelicans. This saw Orlando drop to a 104-92 loss.

The Last Game – 104-92 Loss At Home To The Pelicans

  • The starting 5 was again Markelle Fultz, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr. The bench backup rotation that played during the first half was slightly different. Cole Anthony moved to the point with Gary Harris taking the back up shooting guard spot. Jonathan Isaac, Moritz Wagner and Joe Ingles completed the group.
  • As is expected in preseason everyone got minutes except Kevon Harris (sore right knee). Caleb Houstan made his preseason debut.
  • Both teams play the best rosters available throughout an intensely competitive first half. Zion Williamson caused the team all sorts of problems, scored 16 points in 16 minutes, along with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals and 2 blocks. Brandon Ingram, in 24 minutes, led New Orleans with 18 points.
  • Orlando had a narrow lead at the end of the first quarter and at the half. By the close of the third the Pelicans were up by 1. The Magic offence had gone cold throughout the second half and saw shooting percentages drop compared to the previous 2 games.
  • In a distinct contrast from the previous two games, turnovers were a problem for the Magic. A total of 19 led to 24 Pelicans points. Some were the result of good pressure but many were simply careless. They gave up 50 paint points, 20 more than against Cleveland, but as I highlighted in the last preview 50 points was the NBA average for conceding points in the paint per game.
  • Franz Wagner in 19 minutes played scored 19 points to lead all scorers (8-of-11 overall shooting and 3-of-6 3-point shooting).
  • Moe Wagner posted 16 points and Gary Harris 10. No other Magic player reached double digit scoring.
  • As a team there were 10 blocks, 11 steals and 27 assists.

For Tonight As Orlando Close Preseason Against Flamengo

  • As to tonight expect much of same from the Magic as they play the majority of the squad.
  • It is hard to judge how long the starters will play but personally I’d be surprised to see any of the core unit playing much beyond the later stages of the third quarter.
  • Our projected starting 5 for Orlando tonight is again – PG Markelle Fultz, SG Jalen Suggs, SF Franz Wagner, PF Paolo Banchero, C Wendell Carter Jr

Flamengo

  • This will Flamengo’s third trip all-time to Amway Center (2014, 2018) and the fourth time that the Magic and Flamengo have faced each other during the preseason. In 2015, Orlando travelled to Brazil as part of NBA Global Games in Rio.
  • They hold the record for the most Brazilian national titles, last winning it in season 2020-21. That season they also won the Latin American title, seeing them qualify for the FIBA Intercontinental Cup. In that tournament the winners of the European, Africa and Latin America titles play a knockout round against the winners of the G-League, which if you recall in 2020-21 season was the Lakeland Magic. Flamengo defeated the Lakeland Magic on route to the title. They were runners up in season 2021-22 for the Brazilian title.

Players To Note:

  • Argentinian guard Franco Bambi, in their 2 games of this season is currently averaging 14 points and 6 assists per game, shooting 40% from the 3.
  • There is the vastly experienced forward (who can cover the shooting guard position), Brazilian Gui Pereira.
  • Argentinian Martin Cuello, a 6ft 4 guard. In 9 games played last season he averaged 14 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists.
  • They have limited NBA experience. Didi Louzada has 12 appearances to his name with Portland and the New Orleans Pelicans. Scott Machado has 10 with Houston and the Lakers.

How We Feel As Orlando Close Preseason Against Flamengo

  • To close out preseason with a win would restore that winning momentum. Hugely important is for everyone to come through it healthy. This is a game against what is clearly considered lesser opponents but nevertheless it is important to put into practice the principles that Coach Mosley has.
