Magic Basketball Starts Tonight

Yes! Orlando Magic basketball starts tonight with the first preseason game and it sees the team in Louisiana, to face the New Orleans Pelicans at the Smoothie King Center.

Preseason Game 1 – Magic at the Pelicans

  • U.K. tip time is 1am, 9pm for our friends in Orlando and 8pm in New Orleans.
  • Preseason is not about results but about trying rotations, putting into practice what has been worked on in training camp and most importantly the conditioning. Don’t get hung up on the results.
  • The Magic will play the majority, if not all the squad in a lot of different rotations. No one will play starter minutes, do not expect anyone to go much over 21 minutes.
  • This is the first outing for both teams.

Orlando Magic

New Orleans Pelicans

  • Last season saw a great start for the Pels as they topped the Western Conference after 2 months. Then it went downhill, seeing a 42-40 season, finishing 9th in the West. New Orleans could not however deal with OKC in the 9-10 play-in game, going down on home court 123-118. The playoffs were missed. With Brandon Ingram missing half the season and Zion Williamson absent entirely after a hamstring injury on January 2nd the Pelicans were down their biggest two stars and always looked vulnerable as a result.
  • Season 2023-24 has to be about keeping Williamson healthy, having played only 114 of a total 328 regular-season games across four years. Keeping him and Ingram on the court is the goal.
  • Pelicans GM David Griffin decided to run it back. Remaining on the squad are Williamson and Ingram, along with the ever reliable CJ McCollum, Trey Murphy III, Herbert Jones, Jonas Valanciunas, Larry Nance Jr and Jose Alvarado. However Jaxson Hayes, Josh Richardson and Willy Hernangomez have all moved on.
  • They did make an excellent pick up of Cody Zeller in free agency. The other addition is Jordan Hawkins, a sizeable guard in the draft at pick 14.
  • Our projected starting 5 for the Pels – PG CJ McCollum, SG Brandon Ingram, SF Herbert Jones, PF Zion Williamson, C Jonas Valanciunas
  • On the injury front Larry Nance Jr and Jose Alvarado are both day-to-day with an expectation of being ready for opening night. Trey Murphy III is out after surgery and not expected back until December.
