Ahead Of A Massive Game For Orlando In New York; Where Are The Magic At?

  • The Magic are coming off of a hard fought road back-to-back in Detroit and Washington. Both wins were against sub .500 teams who are working hard every game. Neither win was pretty and both required the Magic to make adjustments and refocus on playing their brand of basketball.
  • Most recently; against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night (6th March) that required the Magic to come from 21 points behind in the first half, taking their biggest comeback win of the season by 119-109.
  • Against the Wizards the Magic built from a defensive standpoint in the second half, guarding their opponents energetically and with determination. Being focused on defence saw them become far more effective offensively. Ultimately, the Magic shot 53.7% from the field, their fifth straight game shooting 50 percent or above. They also knocked down 44.4% with the 3-point-shot, Jalen Suggs making five them.
  • Against Washington Franz Wagner produced a bounce-back performance, totalling 28 points. Paolo Banchero stuffed the box score with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists. Moe Wagner scored 14 of his 16 points in the final quarter. Jalen Suggs (19 points) and Cole Anthony (11 points) rounded out the double-digit scoring for Orlando.
  • The starting lineup was Anthony Black, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero and Goga Bitadze.
  • From the bench came Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony, Joe Ingles, Caleb Houstan and Moritz Wagner.
  • Chuma Okeke and Admiral Schofield were unused on the bench.
  • Jonathan Isaac, Gary Harris, Wendell Carter Jr, Jett Howard, Kevon Harris and Trevelin Queen were all inactive for the Magic.

Tonight

  • Wendell Carter Jr is listed as questionable with the knee soreness that saw him absent from the Washington game. He went through shootaround but is a game-time decision.
  • Jett Howard is again assigned to the G-League with the Osceola Magic.
  • Kevon Harris is listed as out, being two-way G-League.
  • If Wendell is good to go he will likely get the start ahead of Goga. Expect Gary Harris to return to the starting 5 to join Jalen, Franz and Paolo.

The New York Knicks

Season Stats

  • Regular Season Record: 36-26 Run: Lost 1 and are at 3-7 in the last 10 played.
  • Standing: 5th in the East
  • Points Per GameFor 113.2 Against 109.8
  • RatingOffensive 11th Defensive 11th
  • At home the Knicks have a 20-12 record.
  • The Knicks rank second in offensive rebounds, which sees them second in scoring second chance points. Though not excelling in most offensive categories the Knicks are effective at turning the opportunities they have into points.
  • Defensively, the Knicks keep fouls low and so restrict free throw opportunities. They are effective at defending the paint. Opponent second chance points are also second fewest in the NBA, opponent points from turnovers the 4th fewest.
  • The team are led by two All-Stars in Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle. Unfortunately for them one is unavailable, the other questionable. Brunson is averaging 27.2 points per game, shooting almost 48% and making 6.6 assists.
  • The Knicks were active at the trade deadline picking up Alec Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic. They had already acquired OG Anunoby from Toronto on December 30th.
  • Of late one can not overlook Donte DiVincenzo. He has stepped up mightily since the injury crisis hit. In the last 5 games he is averaging 21.8 points, 3.6 assists and 2 steals.

Last Time Out For The New York Knicks

  • Their last outing was a 116-108 home defeat to the Atlanta Hawks on March 5th.
  • The Knicks never led in the game, trailing by as many as 22 in the second quarter. The Knicks came all the way back to tie the game with a minute left in the third period but Atlanta were able to regain control, keeping the Knicks at arms length the rest of the way.
  • The Knicks used only 8 players.
  • They were led by Donte DiVincenzo with 21 points.
  • Miles McBride pitched in with 9 assists, to go along with 11 points
  • Bojan Bogdanovic, with 19 points led the bench.
  • Starting 5 – Donte DiVincenzo, Miles McBride, Josh Hart, Isaiah Hartenstein, Precious Achiuwa
  • From the bench came Bojan Bogdanovic, Alec Burks and Jericho Sims.
  • Shake Milton, Charlie Brown Jr and Jacob Toppin were available but did not play.
  • Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, Duane Washington Jr and DaQuan Jeffries were unavailable.

Tonight

  • Jalen Brunson is questionable with a knee injury that saw him miss their defeat to Atlanta.
  • OG Anunoby, Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson have all now experienced extended absences from the team.
  • Expect that Coach Thibodeau will again go with the same starting five if Brunson is not passed fit.

Head-To-Head With The New York Knicks

  • In 129 regular season games played the score stands at 127-122 to Orlando.
  • Tonight is the final of four meetings this season. On game day 31 Orlando showed a gritty attitude to take a home win by 108-117. Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero both had big performances, whilst Jalen Suggs was at his very best on both ends of the floor. Julius Randle was the Knicks leader with 38 points. On game day 40 a 98-94 road win for Orlando was again built on a total team performance of grit and determination. The Magic defence was immaculate for long stretches, allowing Orlando to hang around on difficult shooting night (39.8%). The Knicks came up empty on 10 of their last 12 shots from open play, also failing to make 3 key free throws late. The latest meeting came on game day 55, seeing the Magic get a home court win by 100- 118 on February 14th. A heavily undermanned Knicks led by 12 points early in the second quarter. However a Magic (with absences themselves) rallied, outscoring the Knicks by 19 in the second quarter, then winning the third and fourth also. Paolo Banchero put up 36 points without a taking a free throw, Franz Wagner had 21 points.
  • Orlando now have a four game win streak over the Knicks.
  • Last season the Knicks won the series 1-2.
  • Each regularly take wins against the other, both at home and on the road. Across the past 4 seasons there have been 6 games in New York, each team has 3 wins.

A Massive Game For Orlando In New York: A Final Thought

  • It will as always when playing the Knicks be physical, it won’t be pretty and both teams will fight hard.
  • If this game is another tight one then a statistic to look for is that of leading going into the final quarter. When the Magic have a lead at that point of the game this season they hold a 31-1 win record.
  • The Magic have on 17 occasions this season held opponents to under 100 points, winning 16 of those games.
  • And finally, why is this game so big? For Orlando the W would put a second win between them and the Knicks, who have played a game less than the Magic. From the Knicks perspective they need this win to draw level with Orlando, and remember we own the season tie-breaker. The Eastern Conference playoff race remains tight and exciting. Only 3 wins separate Cleveland in third from the Magic, though again the Cavs have played a game fewer than Orlando.
